ONE DAY WORKSHOP: PAINTING EN PLEIN AIR

Have you ever wanted to paint a landscape like the impressionists? Learn the basics of how to paint outside - ‘En Plein Air’. Join the growing group of artists who have embraced this authentic way of viewing and appreciating all the beauty around us. Learn what materials you will need to start. Details will be simplified so you can concentrate on painting.

Trust the process of painting. Painting is like solving a puzzle. While you are putting the pieces together you feel like you are paddling upstream. When enough of the pieces are in place you begin to feel confident that you can see clear to the end.

Class begins with a review of materials, set up and preparation of our canvas. Then we cover various approaches toward painting in both acrylic and oil. As a group we discuss the color wheel, color theory and how the colors we choose for landscape painting create the best effect.

Once our location is chosen outside, we set up our easels and decide the view for our painting by using a view finder or your phone’s camera to plan the composition. We create a quick tonal sketch and transfer our composition onto our canvas.

Students are required to have a portable easel and oil or acrylic paints. The recommended supply list is available at registration. If you need to sit during painting, stools or chairs can be provided. Please bring lunch for noon break, snacks, and drinks.
