Youth Dance Class Descriptions

TuTu Toddlers (Non-recital class)

Toddlers are introduced to the world of dance through creative play and basic ballet movement.

Ballerina Basics (Non-recital class)

This class is designed to introduce your child to dance through music, creative movement and the fundamentals of ballet.

Ballet/Tumble with Carla Lewis (Non-recital class)

Beginner ballet positions and fundamental exercises. Rhythm, body awareness and creativity are encouraged.

Hip Hop for Kids (Non-recital class)

This class provides a structured method of learning in various Hip-Hop dance elements in a positive and encouraging class environment. The weekly classes offer assorted sets of original steps and combinations. 1 year of experience is preferred.

Improvisational Dance Workshops (Non-recital class)

Students will learn structured improv exercises and create a unique way to listen and interpret different genres of music. This workshop is designed to broaden a dancer’s repertoire and cultivate their own unique sense of style and movement.

Tiny Toes (Recital)

This class will give your little dancer a basic introduction to ballet steps and positions, while enhancing their motor skills and coordination with fun exercises in music qualities and rhythms, storytelling with movement, and free dance with various props.

Ballet Beginner I (Recital)

In this class, the dancer will start using the basic ballet technique with more detailed direction while still having fun.

Ballet Beginner II (Recital)

This class will enhance your child's coordination, balance and flexibility with the teaching of basic ballet positions, steps, and an introductory to the ballet vocabulary.

Ballet/Tap Combo (Recital class)

Learn the basics of both ballet and tap while gaining awareness of tempo and coordination. Dancers will perform both styles in the recital - one on Friday, the other on Saturday.

Ballet Intermediate I (Recital class)

This class is designed to develop awareness of alignment and basic ballet vocabulary and technique. Class will include basic barre exercises, as well as center work. 2 years required

Ballet Intermediate II (Recital class)

This class will focus on more advanced ballet vocabulary and technique through the execution of barre work, center, and across the floor exercises. Your child will have a clear understanding of body alignment, movement quality, carriage of upper body, and flexibility. 3 years required

Ballet Advanced I (Recital class)

This class will focus on classical ballet technique through a professional class progression. Barre work, center and across the floor exercises are designed to better your technique, as well as performance quality and confidence. These classes will be a perfect fit for those who aspire to improve their dancing! 4 years of ballet required.

Ballet Advanced II & Pre Pointe (Recital class)

This Pre-Pointe class is a pre-requisite for pointe work and is designed for students who have had at least 4-5 consecutive years of ballet training. Pre-Pointe builds upon the student's current ballet instruction and introduces specific exercises to build strength in the foot and ankle and ensure proper alignment for progression to full pointe class. Dancers also learn about pointe shoes, how to properly affix and tie pointe shoe ribbons, and proper foot care. 5 years of ballet required

Ballet Advanced III & Pointe (Recital class)

This class is for dancers who have been on pointe for 2-3 years and the class requires permission. Dancers will continue to build strength and learn steps specific to pointe dancing. Dancers will work on turns, traveling combinations, and adagio exercises reaching an advanced level. Combinations will increase in difficulty as the year progresses. 6 years of ballet required. Pointe experience required.

Ballet Repertory (Recital class)

In this class we will learn and build a repertoire of some of the most favorite dances of classical ballet. These will then be ready to be performed for recital or other personal performances. Although these dances will eventually require pointe shoes, they can be done in soft shoes until that experience is reached. Good technique is required to successfully fit into this class. 4 years + experience or permission by instructor.

Tap l (Recital class)

For dancers exiting Ballet/Tap Combo or just beginning to tap. Students will be introduced to the basics of tap and rhythm and build upon tap fundamentals through barre work, across the floor and center combinations.

Tap Il (Recital class)

This class is designed for dancers with a basic knowledge of tap or for the older, experienced dancer who would like to introduce tap into the repertoire. Students will progress quickly through tap basics and work up towards more advanced tap combinations and rhythms.

Tap lll (Recital class)

Students have learned most basics of beginner tap. 2+ years required.

Beginner Jazz (Recital class)

Moving to music, exercising and just having fun!

Jazz I (Recital class)

Students learn basics of contemporary jazz technique and fundamentals of stretching, flexibility and conditioning. Rhythm, stage presence, and creativity are cultivated.

Jazz II (Recital class)

Students learn at a progressively higher level of difficulty. This class stresses attention to detail in choreography and synchronization. 1 year of Jazz at intermediate/advanced level is required.

Jazz III (Recital class)

Continuation of Jazz II. Advanced dance choreography and technique are introduced. Focus is on achieving an advanced skill set. 2 years of Jazz at intermediate/advanced level is required.

Jazz IV (Recital class)

Continuation of Jazz III. Students gain grasp on how performance, technique, choreography and skills are interwoven. Advanced movement and skills are enhanced. 3 years of Jazz at intermediate/advanced level is required.

Jazz V (Recital class)

Mr. de Barros’s jazz class incorporates aspects of classical jazz with a blend of modern-day competition jazz, Latin jazz or jazz funk. Classes are physically challenging and start by building core strength and stamina alongside basic foundational technique. In addition to improving stamina and core strength, the warm-up focuses on strengthening proper alignment, isolations, flexibility, musicality and coordination while using the breath to relax the mind and body for more fluid movement.

Beginner Contemporary (Recital class)

Class takes movement learned in jazz and incorporates it with primal and contemporary styles. Students learn to have an emotional connection to the music as well as work on free artistic expression.

Contemporary I (Recital class)

Class combines skills in ballet, modern and jazz with focus on technique and expression. Students will work to connect emotionally to the music as well as work on articulation, line, weight, and movement qualities.

Contemporary II (Recital class)

This class will continue to combine skills in ballet, modern and jazz with focus on technique and expression. Students will work to connect emotionally to the music as well as work on articulation, line, weight, and movement qualities. Dancers will work to cultivate their own style and movement quality through improvisational techniques. Prior experience in jazz and ballet is required along with instructor approval.

Contemporary III (Recital class)

Mr. de Barros’s contemporary classes are an eclectic blend of modern based techniques infused with lyrical jazz and, of course, ballet. Warm-ups focus on strengthening proper alignment, technique, musicality and flexibility while using the breath, and working on developing the fluidity through the muscles and joints whether standing up, on the floor or upside down. Across the floor and during center combinations, you will build upon the lessons from the warm-up with movement phrases that get you traveling through space and exploring different qualities of movement and growing past your comfort zone through some improvisation work. The goal is to become better in your technique while pushing your own boundaries to grow as performers and artists.

Musical Theatre l & ll (Recital class)

This class combines high-energy dance with acting and expression to create a performer with good stage presence. Students will learn basic staging direction and character building, as well as an overview of popular songs from American musical theater. This class will follow a basic jazz flow.

Hip Hop Jr. (Recital Class)

This class serves as an introduction to hip hop dance for the younger student. Using games and music, the class focuses on coordination, rhythm, musicality, basic footwork, and improvisation style in a fun, high energy environment.

Hip Hop I, II & III (Recital class)

This class provides a structured method of learning in various Hip-Hop dance elements in a positive and encouraging class environment and offers assorted sets of original steps and combinations. Hip Hop II requires 3 years of experience or permission by instructor. Hip Hop III requires 4 years + experience or permission by instructor.

Junior Elite (Recital class)

Students must be 10-18 years old. In this performance-based program, students will get an opportunity to perform at City of Palm Beach Gardens special events and local activities. Three years of intermediate/advanced jazz class (two years for 10-12 years old) and one year of ballet training is required for acceptance. Enrollment in one ballet class and one jazz class is also required. Additional fees for uniform will apply. Orientation will be held on 1st day of class.

Elite Compete (Recital class)

By invitation only: This is a competitive dance team reserved for dancers with the highest level of experience. Dancers will travel to 2-3 local competitions as well as have the opportunity to participate in a dance intensive workshop. Dancers must be advanced in ballet, jazz and contemporary styles of dance and have previous performance experience. Enrollment in 2 additional elective dance classes is also required. Additional fees for uniform, costume, travel and competition will apply. This class will not have an orientation, but parents may be asked to attend for planning sessions at the instructor’s discretion. Invitations to join for the following year are sent out at the end of the conclusion of the dance year. Dancers are selected based on the following criteria: Dance Technique, Showmanship, Quality of movement, Attendance, Commitment, Respect toward teachers, Kindness towards other dancers.

Leaps & Bounds

Is your child ready to take a leap and join our dance class without mommy for the first time? This class is designed to introduce your child to dance through music, creative movement and the fundamentals of ballet.

Ballet Basics

Beginner ballet positions and fundamental exercises. Rhythm, body awareness and creativity are encouraged.

Jazz & Contemporary

Heat up summer with a combination of Jazz, contemporary and Funk styles. Students will focus on developing strength, working on higher-level skills and cultivating their own sense of movement.

Leaps, Turns, Tricks & Flexibility

This class is for the advanced dancer looking to add to their skill set. Class will begin with strength building and progress to a focus on more difficult jumps and turns as well as work on new flexibility and acrobatic inspired tricks. Take your dancing to the next level with this dynamic new class!

Summer Elite Compete

This class is for new and returning Elite Compete members. Dancers will learn one new competition routine over the course of the summer.

Hip Hop Basics

This class provides a structured method of learning in various Hip-Hop dance elements in a positive and encouraging class environment, and offers assorted sets of original steps and combinations.

Hip Hop Beg/Intermediate

This class will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore, this class will help prepare students for more intense movements in a fun, energetic environment. 1-2 years Hip Hop preferred.
